100 doves essay

The Hundredth Dove Essay

Why do most of all fairy tale stories have a happy ending? This is a question about the short story, The Hundredth Dove written by Jane Yolen. This story reminds me of a fairy tale because it takes place in England a long time ago. Also because there is a king and queen. This is great I think because all of the fairy tale stories I’ve read has a happy ending and this one does not.

All fairy tales don’t have to have a happy ending. If someone has to read the same kind of story over and over with a happy ending it would be boring. I loved the ending to this story because it was something you could not predict. I thought Hough was going to set the dove free but didn’t. Stories that are easy to predict are boring. If all stories have the same ending, readers would lose interest and not read the book because they would know what to expect. Everyone wants a good book including me. I know I wouldn’t read a book if I knew what happened.

In addition to this book being good with no happy ending it can also not be a good book. I have friends that love to read fairy tale stories because of the way it is written. If by a chance they read this book they might not like it. Unlike other fairy tales this short story made me think about the ending for a long time. Other fairy tales don’t have that effect on me because of the way the ending is. I did not like thinking about it because I do not like death plus, it was distracting and I could not stop thinking about it. In most regular fairy tales it is like reading something then when you are done you can get on with your day.

So basically I think that this story is a great story not because it had a weird ending it is because it is different from the other books. Everybody should realize that fairy tales don’t always have to have a happy ending. I like this book because the ending was original.
