Deep Water
Why would the boy try to swim again if he almost drowned one time? The short story called “Deep water” was written by William O. Douglas. It takes place in real events about the author. He almost drowned and never wanted to swim again. If this happened to me I would never go to the pool. He faced his fear and was able to learn how to swim even though he almost drowned.


The boy did not know he would drown when he wanted to take the lessons. Since the big guy tossed him in the pool he almost died and that guy could have murdered him. I would of never wanted to swim again if it happened to me. He didn’t have to swim ever again if he wanted but, he wanted to get over his fear so he would never be in that situation ever again. There is a lot of people that would never do something like that if the same thing happened to them. After he learned how to swim he swam 2 miles in a lake.


When he swam the 2 miles he no longer had the fear of swimming in the water. After years of being afraid of drowning, William (the author of the story) did not have that fear. He has changed from almost drowning to swimming 2 miles. With help from a special teacher William learned how to swim.
In the end he loses his fear to swim. A lot of people don’t have the same kind of guts the author. If they ever find the kid who threw him he should go to jail. There is many fears in this world and getting over on is very difficult for somebody to do.

The Pearl

Why would Kino throw the pearl in the ocean? He would have been a very rich man. Kino the main character of the story “The Pearl” by John Steinbeck. In the end of the book, Kino throw the pearl not wanting it but during the beginning of the book Kino has been talking about how he is going to be a rich man with the pearl. The pearl has changed from Kino and the way he lives from the beginning of the book to the end of the book when he got rid of it.
In the beginning of the book Kino needed a pearl to save his baby son’s life. Out in the water Kino dived and found the pearl to make him and his family rich. When Kino found the pearl he thought it would be the “pearl of the world”. Thanks to the pearl in the beginning, it has made Kino from being poor to being rich. This change made Kino think what he was going to get. Before he found the pearl he wasn’t able to do a wedding for him and his wife because they didn’t have the money it costs.
By the time Kino was trying to sell the pearl he has became a lot angrier from before when he didn’t have the pearl. It was when the buyers were only offering him 1,000 peso’s when he was expecting 50,000 peso’s. He knew the buyers were cheating him witch mad him mad. Also he killed a man to be able to protect the pearl. This time Kino changed from the beginning that was kind of calm too know which is stressed and angry. If he hadn’t of found the pearl, he wouldn’t have killed a man.
In the end, Kino realized the pearl is evil and he knew he has changed ever since he found the pearl. He had enough of the pearl when he killed his son on mistake so he got rid of it. It has changed the life of Kino and Juana when they lost their baby. If they kept their baby they could have changed even more.

reflections on the pearl

I thought this book was kinda boring but it had some moments. Like when the baby got biten.All of the parts that didn't have any action were kinda boring to me. In the end I think this book is pretty good with the plot line.

Why I think juana is worried about Kino.

I think it changes him because the pearl is all he can think about and what it can do for everyone. He told the pearl how special it is to him. Since they became rich the other citizens do not respect him as much and can lead to a big problem if no one wants to help them. Now since they found the pearl he is talking about all the things he is going to do like getting his son a good education.

Reflections

The book The Pearl by John Steinbeck is kind of hard to follow because of the word choices. But other then that the book is not that bad. My favorite part is when Kino's son gets bit by the scorpion. I didn’t want the baby to die I just thought it had the most action. The first ten pages of the 3rd chapter was boring for me because most of what they were doing was discussing what to do with it. I hope the book would start to get better because I like the kinds of books that have action in it. But over all this book is ok.
