Cause and Effect

Authors note: This is a essay about what is the cause and effect in the book Jump Ship to Freedom.
Cause and effect is in every story. Depending on what a character does, many things will happen because of it. For example, since Daniel stole the notes from Captain Iver, the captain was going to sell Daniel in the Indies. This could of been prevented but there are good things that happened, since Daniel Burned the solider notes that was actually his dead fathers.
Captain Ivers is Daniel’s owner and the only way he can buy his and his moms freedom, is if he steals his father’s solider notes that Captain Ivers has. There are many events because of what Daniel did. Because of Daniel stealing the notes, Captain Ivers decides he was going to sell him to the Indies because Daniel is too much trouble for him. Another cause and effect is when Daniel jumps off a ship. Because of this, Daniel is hunted down by sailor mate big Tom.
In conclusion every major event can have big effects on the story. There is always more than 1 event that means there is more than 1 effect. The book Jump Ship to Freedom demonstrates this perfectly.

The Slaves Side of the Story

Authors note: This is an essay explaining how it could affect on how you feel about the story.

The person who is narrating the story usually makes the enemy look bad, when in fact if it was the enemy’s point of view, it would be different. The main character of the book Jump Ship to Freedom has the point of view of the slave but it could sound different if it was the point of view of the owner.
In the story, it takes place on Daniel Arabus’s point of view. He was a slave right after the revolutionary war and wants to use his dead father’s solider notes to buy his and his mom’s freedom. He makes it sound like every white person is the enemy but is that only because it is his point of view. If it was someone else’s point of view like his owner Captain Ivers, it would sound much different. He would make it sound like Daniel is the bad guy.
In addition Daniel, even though he was a slave, he was a trouble maker. He got Captain Ivers mad to the point when they were going to the West Indies. Also if it was Captain Ivers point of view it would talk about how he wanted to sell him to the West Indies because Daniel kept stealing from him. The thing is, that if Daniel kept acting the way he is he would be sold in a blink of an eye.
In conclusion, Daniel makes himself look good because he is telling the story and he makes the other people like the captain, look bad. That is why being the narrator is important.

A Real Family

Authors Note: I this is a piece I wrote on to explain what family really is. With help from the book The Outsiders.

Everybody could have a definition of family. Most people think it is the people like your mom and dad, but some people might not consider that you can have people in your family that are not related to you. In the book The Outsiders by SE Hinton, Ponyboy was raised by his brothers and other boys in a group called the greasers so he did not have a mom and dad.

My family is the people I was raised with. My mom, dad and my sister live with me all my life. But does it have to be the people I am related too. Some people who do not have parents or no siblings might have been raised by other people who would have cared just as much as my family. I don’t think you have to be related to be in your family. A real family consists of the people who love you.

Johnny, who is Ponyboy’s best friend, was raised by the greasers instead of his parents. His dad abused him and his mom did not do anything about it so he turned to the greasers. Dally cared for him a lot, almost like a loving dad or big brother. A similar thing happened to Ponyboy and his brothers. Their parents died in an accident, so the oldest brother Darry, raised his brothers himself with the help of other members of the greasers. Dally and the rest of the gang was always there for Johnny and Ponyboy.

The movie The Blindside is another example. A boy was on the streets and got taken in by a wealthy family. The family started assuming him as another son apposed to be referred as an adopted boy.

"That was the first time I realized the extent of Johnny's hero-worship for Dallas Winston." I think this quote best represents the family theme because even though Dally and Johnny are not related, the still treat each other as their family.

In conclusion a family is not just your dad or brother but it is the people who help raise you or are always there to help you. The Outsiders demonstrates this theme perfectly with Johnny and Ponyboy being raised by the greasers.

Themes of Our Lives

Authors note: I wrote this to explain a critical theme from the book The Outsiders and if the theme effects the real world.

The book “The Outsiders” has an important theme which is to not judge other people, but what does this have to do with the Real world. The main character, Ponyboy was judged a lot because he is part of the greasers. It does have to do with the real world and it teaches people to not judge a book by its cover.

Many people judge others on how they look, like if a boy is wearing big glasses, everybody would think he is a nerd. In the book, the soc’s try to hurt Ponyboy just because he is a greaser. I think is the soc’s got to know him like how Cherry did, they would not try to target him. Everybody in the book besides the greasers, think that the greasers are trouble makers that rob stores. But if you got to know them you would know that some greasers are harmless like Ponyboy.

Like Ponyboy, I am misjudged too. I look like a person who only has a interest in learning and nothing else, but I hate learning and I love sports. I look like I do not like sports because of the way I look like (glasses, curly hair, very tall and slim). Even a trouble maker like Dally is misjudged by the public. Dally is misjudged too, for example he helps Ponyboy and Johnny and helps them so they don’t get into trouble like he did. Dally cared for Johnny especially because Dally seemed to of given up on life when Johnny died and in result Dally purposely killed himself.

Being misjudged happens across everywhere and that is why this book had such a big effect on people. It help realize to dig deeper with someone and find out there real personality before you misjudge them.

The Outsiders, Chapter 3.5

Author’s Note: This is an additional chapter after chapter 3 and, before 4 of the book, The Outsiders. I am doing this for my writing piece in language arts to achieve my goals.

I was not even thinking about how cold I was, the thought of Darry hitting me would haunt me forever. We were in total darkness and Johnny and my only companion was the street light on the corner. They walk to the Park at about 2:30 in the morning and they are all alone. We were running and all of a sudden we saw a blue mustang. It was bob and his friends.

He was wearing lots of jewelry especially on his fingers. They got out and they were looking all drunk, I wanted to run away but, I knew I would be chased down by their mustang real easily. They were drunk, you could tell by the way they looked. They got out and went up to use and said “you guys are the most hated guys in America, no one likes you, not even your brother”.

I gave Johnny the motion to run away from them because I thought we could actually run away. 1, because it is totally dark outside, and 2, they were out by use and they were drunk.

As soon as Bob’s friend reached over to hit me we sprinted out of there as fast as we can without stumbling. We got out of the park and lost Bob and the Soc’s. But just before we did we heard a loud scream it was Bob he screamed louder then anyone has ever screamed before and said “I will kill you Ponyboy”.

I felt nauseas but I had to keep going. I was never as afraid as I am now. Johnny was the same way. We can never be seen again, even if it means to actually run away.

A Proud Country

Authors note: This is an essay explaining why I am proud of this country. It is to help me on my goals.

If anybody could pick one country and only one country that they’re the most proud of, what would it be? For me, it is simple. I think the land of opportunity is the country that everyone should be proud of. Not only did the US fight the British for freedom but, they inspired a lot of countries to do the same. I am very proud of this country, for what has been done in history. I truly think this is the best country in the world for a number of reasons.

The first reason is that I am proud of this country for getting everybody freedom. Being in England for a long time, many people did not like it. Settlers came here because it was awful in England. The living conditions were horrible and, if you were poor, you had to follow the unfair laws.

My next reason on why this is an amazing place, is the way America acted after 9/11. When America was attacked, our country did not just do anything, they invaded Iraq in hopes to stop the terrorist group that caused 9/11. I think what we did was very risky but at the same time brave. Not a lot of countries could stand up for themselves like America did. Especially now that Osama Bin laden is dead.

My final reason is that we represent freedom like no other country, America inspired other countries to get freedom, and that really is something to be proud of. When America got away from the slaves it helped other countries get away from slaves too. I think if America never made the decision to free the slaves, all other countries would have slaves just like America.

These are all my reasons why I am proud of my country. America is the land of the free and is the greatest country in the world, in my opinion. Other countries are still good but it is not even close to where America is.

An American Hero

Some people think that Tony Romo is one of the worst quarterbacks in the NFL. I think they are completely wrong. Sure he has had bad games, especially in the 2010 season, but he has won a lot of games for the Dallas Cowboys.  He even plays when he should be resting because of some serious injuries. People blame him when it isn’t even his fault. Tony Romo is an American Hero for playing when he is hurt to help the Dallas Cowboys win, he will do whatever it takes to be great.

First of all, he plays Quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys. The Cowboys have the most fans in the NFL because of all the wins they have.If a quarterback is on a team America loves, then America should love him.  Ever since the Dallas Cowboys won 5 Super Bowls, America loved them. They can’t just change their minds about the Cowboys because of Tony Romo. When He was drafted in 2004 by the Cowboys, he had to work his way up to be a quarterback  for the Cowboys. When he was drafted he had to work his way up from 3rd string backup to starter.

Speaking of the Cowboys, their rivals are the Washington Redskins. Tony Romo was injured and taken out of the 4th quarter. But he needed to play for the Cowboys. He had a punctured lung and 2 fractured ribs. Most people would not dare to play, especially against Washington’s physical defense. The RedSkins are a sacking the quarterback team and Tony ignored that and had to take 9 pain killers. It was so painful for him that he had to sleep in a chair. I think he should have been in a hospital and not playing. It takes real guts to do what he did.

Tony won that game, he has won a lot of games for his team. Since he got the starting job, Tony Romo has won over 60% of his games. Winning more than half the games you play in the NFL is pretty good. Also he has a 95 career passer rating. Most quarterbacks are lucky to get a 95 quarterback rating in a season.

Tony has the ratings, the braveness, and he plays for America’s team but, people still think he is a bad quarterback. They don’t know the facts on what he really is. I think and proved that Tony Romo the quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys is an American Hero.
